Where agent orders go wrong in retail.

01 / 04

Wrong size, color or model

Customers say "the black ones" or "my usual size". The agent fills in the rest from an old order or the product's default, and sometimes it picks the wrong one.

Agent checkout
  1. Customer: Order the trail runners I was looking at. Size 10.
  2. Agent: Ordered the trail runners, size 10, in Slate Grey. $138, arriving Friday.
  3. Friday
  4. Customer: These are grey?? The ones I was looking at were black.

02 / 04

Wrong quantity

A reorder copies last time's quantity, even when last time was a one-off. Quantity is the easiest detail for an agent to get wrong and the most expensive one to dispute.

Agent checkout
  1. Customer: Order more paper towels, we're almost out.
  2. Agent: Ordered 3 × the 12-roll pack, same as your last order. $71.97.
  3. Two days later
  4. Customer: Why are there 36 rolls of paper towels on my porch? I asked for one pack.

03 / 04

Ordered twice

Customers ask again when they don't see a confirmation, or ask a second agent. Both orders go through, and the one they didn't mean becomes a dispute.

Agent checkout
  1. Customer: Did the phone case ever get ordered? If not, get it.
  2. Agent: Ordered the clear case for your phone, $49. It arrives Tuesday.
  3. Tuesday
  4. Customer: Now I have two of the same case. My partner already ordered one. Seriously?

04 / 04

"I never ordered that"

Sometimes the agent gets it exactly right and the customer disputes it anyway. "My agent bought it" is an easy thing to tell a bank.

Agent checkout
  1. Customer: Order the 75-inch TV we looked at, the one on sale.
  2. Agent: The 75-inch is $1,099 with free delivery on Saturday. Want me to place it?
  3. Customer: Yes, go ahead.
  4. 3 weeks later
  5. Customer: Why is there a $1,099 charge on my card? I never ordered a TV.

One wrong order on a $1,100 TV costs you the TV, the fee and your ratio.

Agents already buy clothes, electronics and everything in between for your customers. Customers ask loosely, so the agent fills in the gaps, and sometimes it guesses wrong. Then your customer disputes it, and the dispute, the fee and the ratio hit land on you, not the agent.
